How To Use Organic Essential Oils
The life force of a plant is said to be contained in the essential oil. In some cases it takes bucket fulls of blossoms to extract a mere teaspoon of essential oil. When used correctly, each essential oil has it’s own special effect on the body. When used incorrectly essential oils can do harm so please always follow the instructions and advice provided.
Here’s the most common and effective ways to use organic essential oils. All these methods are not suitable for every essential oil or blend so check the product information for the best method of use for that specific oil before you get started…
Use our pure single essential oils or blends to make your own delicious body or massage oil. We recommend no more than 3% dilution of our pure organic essential oils to a carrier oil like Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Apricot Kernel Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil. This dilution is approx. equal to…
- 25 drops of essential oil per 50ml of carrier oil
You can also buy our organic body oils that are ready to use with no mixing required. We do not use any nut based oils in our products, like Sweet Almond Oil, because so many people are allergic.
Use a diffuser / vaporiser to scent your home or special place.
- In a vaporiser: 3-5 drops of essential oil per 100ml of water (in a vaporiser)
- Bowl of Steaming Water: Add 1-2 drops to a bowl of steaming water and breathe
- Top up soy wax melt scents: Add the amount of drops as needed
There are many diffusers / vaporises available. Please read and follow the instructions provided.
Compresses can help in the temporary relief of muscular aches and pains.
- 8 drops of essential oil per 300ml of cool or warm water in a bowl or tub. Soak a small towel or flannel cloth. Wring it out so there are no drips then place on area of the body you want to treat. When the compress reaches room temperature repeat the process. Repeat 3 times.
If you are using essential oils that may be irritable to your skin always use a carrier oil to dilute further before adding to the water.
Relaxing aromatherapy baths have been popular for 100’s of years and are the perfect way to relax and unwind in today’s busy lifestyle. A good temperature for an aromatherapy bath is 27-34 degrees celsius with a soaking time of around 20 minutes.
- Add 5-10 drops in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil or full fat milk per bath
A carrier oil is necessary to prevent the essential oil from being too powerful. For a non-slip bath for elderly or young people, full fat milk may be used instead of oil. For children aged 6-12 months use only 1-3 drops of essential oil and 3-4 drops for a child aged 1-5. Be aware of which oils are suitable for children. Our Dream organic blend is a great choice.

Haven’t we missed something? What about ingestion?
You might of heard of some multi-level marketing companies promoting their essential oils as suitable for ingestion. And yes, some oils can be ingested in small amounts reasonably safely… but… does the reward outweigh the risks?
As a general rule, at Lemon Canary we do not recommend the ingestion of essential oils. We look at it this way… do you eat orange peels? If you ate large amounts of them, would that help or hinder your health? If you feel that ingesting a concentrated orange peel oil would help you, perhaps a better way to start that journey is to eat more organic oranges and other fruit. Consuming fruits, nuts, seeds and other plants the way nature intended it is definitely our preference. Be very careful and if you choose to ingest essential oils please only do so under the guidance of a qualified and experienced health professional.
